Prezio Stone Translucent Onyx Slab Program
Reviewed pricing, lead time, freight, and final configuration are confirmed during quote review before order release.
Onyx is the original backlit stone, and this program carries sixteen translucent onyx colorways from pure White Onyx to banded Tiger Onyx and deep Black Dragon. Onyx transmits more light than any other natural slab material, which makes it the default specification for glowing bars, reception desks, and feature walls.
Every colorway is stocked as 2 cm slab material with the catalog's unlit and backlit reference photography, so the specification is approved on both readings of the stone. Banding and cloud structure vary lot to lot; sequential lots and bookmatch sequencing keep large fields coherent. Onyx is a calcite stone: on horizontal surfaces it is specified with the same sealing and care discipline as marble.

Installation and Care Notes
- Backlit assemblies pair 2 cm translucent stone with an even-output LED backlight panel; specify high-CRI panels (90 CRI or better) in the 3000K to 4000K range for faithful stone color.
- Hold a consistent standoff between the LED panel face and the stone back, typically 3 to 4 in, so diode hotspots blend into an even glow; edge-lit panel systems can run thinner where cavity depth is limited.
- Plan panel joints and seam positions against the lighting layout during shop drawings; seams read brighter or darker when they cross a lit field, so align seams with grid lines of the light panels.
- Provide ventilation or heat dissipation for the light cavity and serviceable access to drivers and panels.
- Mechanical fixing per the engineer of record: cleat or standoff systems for wall panels, full perimeter support for horizontal backlit surfaces.
- Seal stone faces and edges with a penetrating sealer suited to translucent stone before grouting or first use; use pH neutral cleaners.
Program Support
- Quote first program: colorways, quantities, and production timing are confirmed in writing before any order is placed.
- Slab lot photography is approved during quote review so the delivered stone matches the approved reference lot.
- Support covers submittal documents, backlit assembly reference details, and fabrication questions through the quote team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why onyx for backlit work?
Onyx forms in translucent calcite bands, so it passes more light than granite, quartzite, or marble. At 2 cm over an even LED field the whole slab glows and the banding reads in full color.
Where should onyx be specified?
Vertical and low-wear surfaces are ideal: bars, reception desks, feature walls, fireplace surrounds, and vanity fronts. For horizontal wet or working areas onyx needs disciplined sealing and pH neutral care.
How different are lots?
Onyx is a high-variation category: banding, cloud density, and translucency shift lot to lot. Your quote includes current unlit and backlit lot photography for approval before release.
